Why does rendering on a PC take 10 seconds compared to 0.25 seconds in-camera?

No the embedded jpeg in D800 NEFs (and all other modern Nikons) is full resolution (36mpixels) medium compression without exif and it is rendered by the in camera raw converter on the fly from the raw data with the selected picture control settings.
