Nice pictures. I do like the robin.

What I have found with the 70-300 and bifs and the recycle thing is to focus out at infinity as the lens seems to if the camera cant  pick up the bird out there it then moves  back trying to focus . If it misses focus  moving  forward to infinity then it recycles. Maybe I am wrong  but it works for me.
