D600 tight AF area hesitation

My instore test of the D600 gave me concern of the AF area and tight 39 fp layout.
I would be upgrading from a D300 and would like to go FX.
Interested if owners have found the tight focus area a real issue in sports, wildlife photography.
Read the standard Kelby, Rockwell reviews and others.....
