I bought an NEX-6 with the kit lens along with the SEL55-210 ($199, long story). I replaced a Nikon D40. After reading of all the issues and shortcomings here with regard to the NEX-6, I'm not feeling too good about dropping $1000 on a mediocre camera.

My first reaction: if this is a joke, it's not funny. Sounds like maybe you got a deal!

Maybe I should have just sucked it up and updated to a newer DSLR and a separate pocket digital for keeping in my pocket.

Except you stopped using your DSLR for a reason (too bulky, in my case), and the low quality of a P&S would've bugged you.

i either need to start enjoying my camera or stop reading........

Use it already!  The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes.

Is this post meant to be ironic? If so you need to be careful as such things don't translate well on the internet, particularly when there is a large community reading who do not have English as a native language

The NEX 6 is not a mediocre camera: it is an excellent rangefinder-style camera which is perfect for travel and street type photography. The only direct alternatives to the NEX 6 are more expensive options from Fuji or Leica, the Micro four thirds format that suffers from a smaller sensor and which can never support full-frame, or the Samsung NX format which has a nicer lens system than Sony but (currently) inferior bodies. Neither Canon or Nikon mirrorless systems offer any real competition to NEX for different reasons

A DSLR is an entirely different proposition and can't really be compared to a mirrorless camera any more than a 35mm rangefinder system can be compared to a 35mm SLR system

You can compare, just realize that there are valid reasons for one or the other.
