The F-stop rating on a compact lens is the true aperture, not 35mm equivalent DoF. DPR regularly provides 35mm equivalent DoF aperture ratings in their reviews.

We are basically saying the same thing. I just think if we are going to specify DX field of view in 35mm equivalents, we should also use 35mm equivalent DoF aperture. In the end it doesn't matter.

Personally, I find it misleading if true focal length and aperture ratio are not given.  I have seen posts on fora and letters in ‘Amateur Photographer’ asking about how focal lengths and apertures change when lenses are switched between cameras!  An accompanying reminder of how formats compare to 35mm can be helpful, but with digital photography it is trivially easy to crop any image.  But it would be less misleading to compare fields of view rather than focal lengths between systems.
