I have never used an L bracket but I have seen them in use.  I have a ball head and if I need to switch orientation fast, I can just flip the head to the side.  Sure it moves the eye price a little further than the collar or an L bracket, but if I really need it fast, I can suck it up a little.  I would rather that and keep the money for either a collar or bracket in my pocket, but that's just me.
