Jack,

I just made that decision, and my 60D DSLR is gone. With the 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 and 55-250 f/4-5.6 lenses, the DSLR is no better than the FZ200 at ISO 800. However, the FZ200 cannot do it all, so the addition of the Canon G15 was needed for flash and low light comparable to the DSLR. Those two cameras cover all the DSLR capabilities. The G15 is surprisingly good at ISO 3200 and with an f/1.8 lens, besides.

The weight and bulk of the 60D kit was just too much; and the very low usage for the $$$ tied up bothered me a lot.

I've tried going without an SLR before; but always came back to one. However, I never had alternatives like the G15 and FZ200 before, either. I also have the Panasonic ZS15 and the Canon S90. So this time around, I have confidence that going without a DSLR will work.

Jerry,

Your comments are very interesting. I bought the G15 just before Christmas and used it that day in the "Movie Digest" mode. For most of the shots I used Sony a65 and a57 DSLRs. I took about 150 pictures which I cut down to 62 keepers. When I looked them over, I was surprised that about 40 of them were from the G15 though it was used for less than 1/3rd of the shots.

At this point, I'm not quite ready to get rid of my Sony DSLRs but I am totally unwilling to add any more expensive lenses to my kit. I really do not enjoy changing lenses and it seems I always have the wrong one mounted.

My plan is to do whatever works. I've long abandoned the idea that I'll have the perfect combination of cameras and lenses. There's always something new and fun to consider.

Thanks for the post, Jerry.

Jack
