New and need help with Canon SX50

Hi everyone.

New to photography other then my smart phone or a point and shoot. My husband got me the canon sx50 and I am totally lost!!! I was trying to get a picture of my son and dog playing. I had it on sport and they all were blurry. I have a kodak z950 that has the same setting and I have no issues with blur. Am I doing something wrong or is this the way the camera is?

I want to learn more about changing the settings and everything you can do with the cameras and thought this would be a good camera to start that on. Am I right or is there a better option? I want a sport feature that works and would like a decent zoom. I don't want to keep this if it isn't going to work for kids sports or such.

Thanks for any help in advance. Just remember I am totally illiterate with this stuff at this point!
