Hello all.

These are the essential points, hope they can explain what I have in mind.

  • I am trying to decide on upgrading, I think a lot and could not decide, maybe reading some wise opinions here could help.
  • I am a bit conservative and I am still using a Panasonic Lumix GF1 and G2 with 4 lenses, and until now I am happy with them, but there is a time where we want more.
  • If I do the upgrade I will maintain those cameras, I get a bit sentimental with gear that has provide me lot's of pleasure and still deliver good results.
  • I mostly only use base ISO and sometimes 800/1600 ISO, it is very rare to use more than this.
  • I do a lot of landscapes now, sometimes some portraits and some pro work where I don't need high ISO.
  • I like to have always two cameras with similar image quality.
  • That is why I have think on getting a GH3 and a OMD, the GH3 for a bigger camera and better ergonomics and the OMD for a smaller camera, to use in other situations.
  • Both GH3 and OMD are very similar in IQ. That is why I have picked these two.
  • I am aware that both cameras are very good and each one has it's own personality.
  • Like I am a Panasonic Lumix user since 2008, I have also tough on a GH3 and a G5 instead of the OMD (G5 quality is also similar to the GH3). I like the OMD and already tried all these cameras. The only thing I did not liked so much on the OMD was the menu interface, but this is not an Olympus fault, is just that I am used to the Panasonic Lumix interface.
  • If I go for the GH3 and G5 I save a bit of money. But maybe I miss some useful OMD features.
  • I will use for now my 4 Panasonic Lumix lenses, 7-14mm, 14-45mm, 45-200mm and the 20mm. But I am planning to get the PL 45mm Macro and the 25mm 1.4 at a later time. the 12-35mm and the 35-100mm will stay on my wish list for a while I guess.
  • I can also decide for Olympus lenses besides those Panasonic Lumix.
  • Last point. I know that Panasonic is working on a GX1 camera form but with built in EVF, and maybe Olympus is doing the same. If I wait I can choose a camera like this as a second body. I love the form of the GF1 (GX1).

That said, as you can see this is not easy to decide for me, to me buying new gear is to maintain it for a long time, usually 2/3 years. Is a serious decision for me.

So, please give me your thoughts on this, maybe I decide sooner if I read the wise opinions I asked.

Note: I will not change from Micro 4/3, so pointing me cameras like Sony Nex or others is not useful.

The first thing that will benefit you with a clear head is never become sentimentally attached. When it comes time to make changes it will be easier to sell the old gear so you can defray cost for the new stuff.

Hi Ryan,

Yes that is a thing that I have to learn and get rid of it, it will be easier and I could use the money of the "old" cameras to help on the buy of the new ones.

I read all you said, and helped me, as the others reply's, it is easier when we read others wise opinions.

Best,

Aleo

When it comes to different camera systems together I would not advise on doing that. First even if the model is not the same the menu system and placement of controls are pretty much the same with in the same manufacture. This can even be a point and shoot camera much carries over between same manufacture. IMO it makes for faster navigation of the camera. Next, I know the lenses can mix and match, but I can not answer to consistency of results by doing that. In this case it's the image stabilization and CA adjustment factor.

I would also do the math so to say by taking your current camera and lenses to see how much you can get if you sold absolutely everything. I would also Pre-order two GH-3 cameras just to get on the list.

when it comes to accessories from batteries, chargers, verticle grips they are different and that is a lot of accessory management to do things IMHO.

you also have to think about what camera bag to hold everything and how to organize it. Back to the battery thing you also need a way to keep it separate. the last thing you need is thinking you have spare batteries and they are for the wrong camera. Sure you can label and color code certain things and I do that.

last, costs to cost. It will help 100% if you take pen to paper and list the gear you have and how much you can estimate you can sell them for.

next list every item with cost next to them to get a idea of how much out of pocket you need. Be sure to account for accessories like an external flash, batteries, filters bags, and so on.

since I am doing video with my GH-3 I bought an Ikan external monitor which is the best thing to have, did that over Marshall with some advice fron B&H photo. If you do that the little ball head with cold shoe mount is awful, buy the bogen/manfrotto part 100 times better and sturdier.
