If you don't like the restriction of the 35mm prime fixed focal length . . . and would like a little flexibility with zoom . . . check out the NIKON 35-70 f/2.8 D . . . fabulous lens . . . pro quality and lightweight . . . now replaced by the 24-70 heavyweight . . . fairly readily available on C/L or eBay in the $300 - $400 range . . . I have one with a D7K . . . fab lens . . . and it also does macro!!!
If not fast enough at 2.8 . . . add an SB-600 for $150 to $200 and start bouncing indoor flash . . . you need to get there sooner or later regardless . . . but the D7K has very good high ISO capabilities that work in your favor.
Good luck with your quest!
Best,
