filters?

Until today, I've given very little thought into the use of filters. And I have yet to use any. Do you guys use filters, if so what kind, and why............any pros/cons? I looked at some pics with, and without them, and I liked the result with, but after reading what other people feel about them, I'm not so sure they are really beneficial.
