I think it is interesting that the Olympus OM-D E-M5 became so popular.

It reminds me of the initial months of the Micro Four Thirds system. The very first camera launched was the Panasonic G1. It came with the 14-45mm kit zoom lens, generally considered to be a stunning kit lens. The camera was very innovative, with great features for a photographer, including a good EVF, articulated LCD, built in flash, a good grip, and many wheels/buttons for control.

The G1 was largely ignored.

Then came the Olympus E-P1. Compared with the G1, it had a poor feature set. No built in flash, no tiltable LCD, no EVF. But it did have a nostalgic retro look, with some decorative metal panels.

The E-P1 was a great hit.

Now, I am seeing the same again with the Olympus OM-D. I think it is the retro look and metal styling that causes it to be very popular.

I think that comparing the E-M5 to the E-P1 is unfair : it is true that the G1 was a better camera than the E-P1; the E-P1 was far from mature at the time : the AF was slow, much slower than the G1, there was no way to plug in an E-VF and the LCD was bad in bright sun, making the focusing of MF lenses difficult. ( I first bought an E-P1, then a cheap end of life G1 when the G2 was issued).

But nothing like that can be said of the E-M5 : it ticks all the box, including the best sensor ever seen for 4:3 and an extraordinary IBIS fitted in a very reactive camera and small body. So, yes, the E-M5 a comes in an attractive shape, but it is not its only advantage, far from it. It has some ergonomic glitches, but no real serious disadvantages like the E-P1 had compared to the G1.
