I'm quite happy for Pentax to make an 'A' version of any camera for those who want an articulated screen, but I'd be buying the less expensive fixed screen version if I had the choice.

I like my K5 with its fixed screen.  I've had Canon G series compacts and a G1X as my non-DSLR alternatives and the reality is that I've only used their screens flipped out for two or three images in many thousands of shots.  That's just me.  I respect that others' styles may make more use of an articulated screen.  I don't really agree that it's much of an asset to able to fold the screen around for it's own protection.  You'd have to keep unfolding it to review.   That would be a PITA and work the joint over a few years.  I prefer to keep my camera in an over-the-shoulder case.

I don't think it's good enough to say that 'those who don't want to use a flip screen don't have to'.  I would just prefer not to have one at all.  They add cost, bulk out the camera, require a smaller screen, add complexity and may comprise WR. And they do sometimes get broken.  (For the record, I too am under 65 and don't shoot BIFs either).

On mirror-less cameras........  I agree with Eric.  They're gaining in popularity.  However, I don't think it's their EVF or flip screens.   Having said that, I like a good built in EVF (like the XE1) over a poor OVF (like the G12) or no VF (like the K01).  What's driving up MILC sales is the IQ per camera size and weight equation.  It's the savings off the sheer bulk of DSLRs that's making people choose them, not the viewing systems.   MILCs give DSLR IQ and weigh literally half the weight of a DSLR.  They aren't (yet) good at action, sports or wildlife, but they're excellent at general photography - that and their size suit a lot of people.

Cheers, Rod
