As it is now this system, which should be reasonably fast, takes almost 30 seconds to load Word. That seems unreasonable to me, even given Microsoft's somewhat bloated software. Dxo's OP took even longer to load although I have stopped using it since I installed LR4 and PhotoNinja.

Mike,

I believe I read in another thread that you don't have a SSD yet. At your first opportunity, do consider installing a SSD for your OS and programs. I'm running SSDs in my Win7 tower and Win8 laptop.

The Win7 tower was built from the beginning with a SSD so I can't compare with/without but I can say it made a HUGE difference in loading programs. Especially Photoshop 7 which used to take forever to load using WinXP with a 7200 rpm spinner.

I converted my laptop from Vista with a spinner to Win8 with a SSD and the difference in boot, loading programs and shutdown are HUGE! It's like I bought a new, latest model laptop.

Using a SSD for OS and programs has been the one most significant speed change that I've ever experienced. That includes custom building new PCs to replace old ones. And the bonus is that the system and programs will never slow down due to fragmentation of the system drive. Fragmentation slow downs do not exist for SSDs.  This includes the Windows registry.
