I heard you loud and clear. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! YOGI perfectly explained how to make your XP computer fit in case you do run into problems with updating the Canon software; for RAW you will need to do that because the older software doesn't know how to handle the T4i RAW files. If I were you I would start using your current computer until the hardware proves to be too slow or XP is indeed too old for newer software.

In case you need it: there is a hardware compatibility check program available from Microsoft that allows you to check if your computer can be updated to Windows 7 ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20 ). Helps to prevent a frustrating rollback. You have sufficient memory for sure. It will probably complain about your video card not supporting the transparent Aero desktop, meaning you will get a non-transparent desktop like in XP.

I've found value in every response given so far.  Some, given my stated situation, are a better fit than others, for me.   Yogi's was one of the most helpful and encouraging.  What a pleasant discovery to find so many willing and helpful people!

I hadn't thought of just doing a Win 7 upgrade.  My machine is 8 years old and I've done some minor upgrades and repairs.  As others have said, new computers are very reasonable, at the moment.  My inclination is what both Yogi and you have answered.  I'll have plenty on my plate with the new camera, without having to deal with a new OS/computer to learn at the same time.  Thanks for your continued help, Mike
