Goodby imaginary D400?

Actually, the rumors that I've read indicate that there will be a new TOL camera in place of the 7d and that the 7d's price will be reduced and remain in production, rather than offer a 70d.  So, they aren't merging the 60d & 7d, they're just switching a higher spec'd body into that slot. They apparently aren't doing an upgrade to a 7dII, they're doing a new model to take over that slot.

So, they'll still have 2 cameras at the top of the heap, like they had before with the 7d & 60d.

Nikon can't do the same thing that Canon is doing.  The 7d is still well ahead of the 60d, in all aspects and could be considered a true upgrade, even if it is 2 years old. Nikon couldn't slide the d300 down to the d7000 slot, without a new sensor.  Nikon will still have to compete with the 7d at its new, lower price point and will also have to compete with Canon's new TOL APS-C camera. They can't do that without upgrading both the d7000 and the d300.
