To all those that tried to blame the OP and suggested he should be responsible for the mistake, well gentlemen, that is a load of bull crap.

First of there is no law that says one must read the manual. I've used the NEX-6 for over a month without bothering to do so...

From my consumer perspective, no permitted camera operation should be responsible for the product failure. Since the camera doesn't prevent you from removing the lens while powered on, it should not cause a permanent failure to the camera. If it does, the design can be considered faulty and the camera defective because even a person aware of this can easily make that mistake.

When NEX-6 goes to sleep for example retracting it's PZ lens to boot it is very hard to tell that it is still ON. Both wife and I have placed the camera in the bag at least once thinking it's off.

So let's be reasonable here and I agree with others who said if the operation could be permanently destructive the engineers should have a lock mechanism that prevents the lens removal with camera on and a sticker with BIG RED letter when unpacking the camera first time.

Your washing machine or the dish washer will not open or seize operation when you try to open the door when they are in the cycle and this shouldn't be any different.

Actually your post is a load of bull crap as you so eloquently put it.

Yeah, is not a law...is called simple logic.  Get a new piece of hardware and spend some time learning how to use it correctly or F it up and blame the company.

Really? So since my car allows me to go past the speed limit or turn into incoming traffic, I will blame their designers?  Or what it I put more air on my tires than recommended and something goes wrong..why didnt the tire have a mechanism to stop me from putting too much air?

Or my revolver allows my finger to be smashed if I dont move it out of the way instead of having a sensor to prevent it from doing so....and so on on and on.

There is a note about turning it off, clearly there. You do not do it because you think you are smarter than they are, then you are accepting responsibility for your actions.

If you feel is a stupid design when you read that then you return it to the store and get your money back.

If that damaged it or not...I dont know but the fact is, the instructions were clear.
