Hi - I just wanted to add a couple thoughts...
Windows XP is a good OS but frankly it is becoming obsolete and Microsoft either has or soon will stop offering updates for security fixes etc. Many newer programs may not work on it or may not have been tested on it as it's so old.
I work in IT and between home and work I have... at least a dozen computers that I use for different tasks. Most are still XP but its days are numbered.
Windows 7 is excellent, not so very different from XP but certainly a newer generation.
I've read and heard from co-workers that Windows 8 is something to avoid for now. Microsoft tried to turn a tablet / phone operating system into a desktop operating system and those are two very different usage situations. One writer said it is difficult to work in multiple windows on Win 8 and suggested MS change the name to "Window".
I've got Win 7 on my main machines and no desire whatever to try to use a 'tablet' OS on my desktop. Whatever PC you buy, if you buy one, make sure you get it with Windows 7 on it and already installed. MS is pushing Windows 8 very hard but let that be their problem; Win 7 is an excellent and very capable operating system for desktop use. Win 8 might be good IF you have a PC with a touch screen but then, who wants to keep moving their hands back and forth from a keyboard to a screen? I don't.
Good luck!
I just responded to Oris30 a few lines up, in this thread, that coincidentally are appropriate here, too. I hear you loud and clear about the touch screen with regards to Win 8. Hey, I still can't believe that Canon put this feature on the 4ti, and after learning about it's capabilities, this has become a huge selling point to me, among many of the camera's features. I guess I'm proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks. On the camera's LCD yes, on a desktop monitor? NFM (not for me), thank-you.
I know from what I've read, that what you say about XP and Win 7 is all true. But it's kinda like the old pair of tennies you hate to get rid of because they're so comfortable.
I better keep after it, I'm getting behind in my responses, thanks for your time and your willingness to share the knowledge, Mike
