GIMP has layers of many types, but not adjustment. This is one of those misguided criticisms I was talking about earlier. Adjustment layers are fairly useless for these reasons:

  • Adjustment layers involve large PSD files clogging up disk.
  • It is far more efficient to track changes with non-destructive edits as in Bibble Pro Corel Aftershot or Adobe Lightroom.
  • GIMP has a very speedy multiple Undo facility.

Yesterday while looking for info about the NL Filter, I came across a 2011 book about GIMP, published by O'Reilly. It gave me some good advice! Previous info about the NL Filter was mostly based in the film-scan and reduced-color (GIF) era.

GIMP 2.6 for Photographers, by Klaus Goelker, O'Reilly, $17 for Ebook or PDF. [Unknown if 2.8 revision is in progress.]
