Thanks for the suggestion, but there are occasions when I do want all the DoF I can get - that would be an advantage over my DX 17-55mm. I also want to get better resolution if I can. But certainly there are limits to my dedication - I prefer zooms to primes, and I’m not willing to turn our days out into a tripod-carrying marathon for me, and a spectator sport for my wife.

Then you will just have to accept a certain level of mediocrity as that kind of photographer. Nothing wrong with that.
The best landscape and cityscape photographers use tripods and wait for the best lighting and so forth. I am unwilling to follow that discipline, so my landscape/cityscape photos are always mediocre, unless by rare luck.
It sounds like you are a travel photographer who wants to be another kind of photographer by buying equipment that could produce that kind of photography, if used in a different way than you use it. Get the Tamron, it suits you style of shooting better. The IQ advantage of the 24-70 is irrelevant to your needs.
The most important variable is the person taking the picture. You're a non-tripod person with shaky hands who can't spend the time to find the best aspect and lighting for your kind of shot, by your own account. The quality of your images will not be seriously affected by the IQ of the zoom you select. The 28-300 is a great travel zoom, and very serious photographers make very serious photos with it. It has VR. That with one or two small primes, and you're all set to go.
