My Nikon D90 doesn't shut down either when opening the card-slot but, to be honest, I'd kind of expect some data corruption when yanking the card out while the camera is still writing to it. Hence, I think, the NEX-6 has an indicator LED next the card.

Removing an sd card without using the "eject" option when it's connected to a pc/mac via a usb cable isn't recommended. The SD cards are very sensitive to this form of torture but they will survive being submerged in water or frozen for periods of time... fairly hardy in that respect etc. Drowned many a card and after drying, still worked. Apart from sea water, instant death to most electrical goods
