DX mode is useful in a pinch, but obviously its not intended for heavy use. That said, it does offer an advantage over simply cropping in post, the camera meters only within the DX crop for center weighted and matrix metering. A much smaller advantage would be DX crop mode offers a visual aid to shoot through the highest performing part of the lens.

It's nice to be able to turn a 85/1.4 into one of the worlds highest performing 135/2.0 @ 15mp with the push of a button. But again, only in a pinch would I do this.

With any of these lenses, the D800 has a built in telextender effect that increases the zoom range by 150%, compared to other cameras.

Are you talking about the DX mode ? The image is cropped to the DX format at the expense of resolution. It can be done with any camera, always at the expense of resolution, although it is true that there is more leeway with resolution when your camera starts at 36 MP .

Isn't it true that with the D800 at the pixel level the FX and DX modes have the same basic resolution. They are the same pixels. DX has 1.5x less FOV for an apparent increase in the telephoto effect. The only advantage I see for the DX mode with a DX lens is that it crops the image in the camera instead of you doing it in PP. Of course, the other potential advantage is smaller file size.

Another point to be made is that the basic resolution of the D800 and D7000 is the same. The pixel pitch is close to the same for both cameras. Only the amount of pixels in the picture is greater for the D800 because the sensor is larger. Therefore, for a given size print from both with the same FOV the D800 has more pixels in the print and can look sharper. The greater number of pixels in the D800 image gives it more leeway when cropping to achieve a different composition.
