It may not be possible to determine if changing the lens was the cause of this failure. However, changing anything on a piece of electronics while powered, unless specifically designed to do so, is wrong.  I'm sure the manufactures try to make their products as 'fool' prof as possible but some fool will come along and prove them wrong. I'm not sure what all the contacts on the lens camera interface are for, but sorting one out to ground or a voltage contact could cause a problem. I have at times changed lenses while thinking the camera was off with out any damage. But that doesn't mean its ok to do. Read the manual.
