I do not get this; that there would be an underwhelming improvement over the a900. the a900 has no live view; the a99 has the best live view of any camera. the a900 had serious problems with color noise, both at base iso (when lifting the shadows) and at higher iso; the a99 has a fantastic dynamic range and much better high iso. With the a900 I often had to use the 'smart preview' function to get the exposure right (with high contrast images), with the a99 I can simply see the exposure, either on the EVF or the LCD, and when needed with a live histogram. In general the a99 is very reliable in exposure, better than any camera I have ever used (including several Nikon bodies). I can check the focus by just zooming in on the relevant part of the image, both with the EVF and the LCD. the LCD is articulating and much more usable in bright light then the one used in the a900 and the a77 (and the one on the d600). etc. etc. They are two completely different camera's, that share the mount and the fantastic colors. The only reason I can see to prefer the a900 is when the OVF is preferred over the EVF, a very personal choice.

I do not disagree with what you write, just noting that for many photographers the things you bring up might not always be top priorities. While for example a OVF might be. As you point out, the A99 and the A900 are two very different cameras, and in my eyes geared towards slightly different audiences.
