Capture 1
In reply to David L. Moore, 5 months ago

Hello everybody.

It's just 10 days that i've got the x-e1. I was surprised by the quality of the jpeg out of the camera. Tried Lightroom and it wasn't only that in the 3rd picture that i took with the camera i clearly saw what you call "watercolor efect", but in general, i didn´t like the result in terms of color and rendition. Too much work to level the result of jpeg.

But just the day before tomorrow i received the beta version of capture 1. And i have to say that, IMHO, the discussion about raw in x-trans is almost over. We can't publish any image, but i can say that, in most of the cases, in normal pictures, is evident in rendition and color and detail the difference between lightroom and C1. But in the critic cases, it's not a slight difference, but a world between both raw developers.

Comparing with jpegs, colour is not the same, but probably i prefer C1. IMHO, it's something like a dessaturated Velvia, but with a lot more room in DR and detail. As it's the first time that i use this program, i'm not really developing my photos, just basic adjusment. What i can say is the the default setting are just as good, or better, than Jpegs, but with the benefit of being raw that can be developed (highlights, shadows, etc...)

It's curious, but some months ago i read (i don´t remember if here or in other forum, it was when i was getting information for my adquisition) that the solution probably will come from C1, for two main reasons: maybe X-trans users are not the big cake for Adobe or Aperture, but it can be a great group for a company like Phase One.

And second, and more important, in the post it was said that medium format Phase One back and camera it's similar to X-trans, as the sensor has a similar "non geometrical" pattern (to say something, probably you'll understand me, it's difficult to explain this in english for me), so they have the professional experience that Adobe and Aperture haven´t (both had always worked with bayer pattern) as they have developed before a similar (and probably more complex) sensor.

Anyway, if you want to test the beta of C1 on your own, just ask for it. There is no requirment, just not publish any picture. I asked and received the link about 3 hours later.

Best regards!!

Jorge
