In 2000 the JPEGs of the Nikon D1 were better than the results from raw. The raw processors improved and so the results. The JPEGs always stayed the same. I am now very confident (e.g. Capture One and also hopefully LR soon) that the results from raw will match the JPEGs plus the more latitude you get from 12-14 bit images.

It is amazing how people here discount the advantages of 14 bit RAW performance. Somehow an 8 bit jpeg is good enough.

Ratty, what do you think of the Capture 1 samples thus far. The ones I have seen look great. I have been getting by on the jpegs and now even happier using tiffs converted in silky pix and the edited in Aperture. I can't wait to get Raw support though, and I am wondering if Apple is going to come along or if I should just get C1 when it's out.

Have not had the time to look closely.  If they look good to serious photographers, I am sure that I'll have no problems with them.

Anyhow, to address what you are saying, I think that the people who discount the advantages of Raw support are just wearing self inflicted blinders because it helps them cope. Hopefully it will all be a mute point soon.

Agreed. Powerful blinders.
