Advantages of frame stacking star shots?

So I have a little experience shooting the sky, nothing major at all. With my new K5 I am taking more interest in doing so and I realize that without a GPS module for star tracking, I am limited in what kind of light I can pull out of the sky. Since the arrangement of stars doesn't change from moment to moment, does this mean alignment in post allow for endless stacking? This seems like it would allow one to use faster shutters and higher iso with auto align and cumulative blending, so noise is reduced and the overall exposure is increased.
Just looking for pointers and to set me straight if I am misunderstanding something here, thanks. Also feel free to post any other info, much appreciated.
