I'm not buying that it was the cause of OP's problem. As you point out it would be very bad design, and it is a design apparently not present in Sony Alpha digital cameras. Also, if it was REALLY important no to do that, I seriously doubt the instruction would be merely buried in the depths of the user manual - it would be in big bold letters very near the front and most likely printed on the camera body.The Nex 5N carries the same warning and I assume the other NEX cameras have it as well  - has this happened to anyone else?
