zackiedawg did a great job (as typical, I find) of discussing the differences between the two cameras.  As he said, they are quite different from one another.  If you had more experience with photography, it would probably be obvious to you which camera was the one for you.  But, that's why you are here.

Personally, I could never accept the limitations that the small sensor imposes on the Panasonic.  zackiedawg covered this pretty thoroughly.  One additional difference that the bigger NEX sensor provides is increased dynamic range (i.e., the blackest blacks and the whitest whites and everything in between).  Bigger sensors, all things being equal, allow you to capture a greater range of light.  When you exceed the dynamic range of the Panasonic sensor, those areas of the image are rendered either black or white, with no detail.  This happens to the NEX, too, but it happens a lot sooner on the Panasonic.

The NEX also shoots in an uncompressed RAW format (as well as JPGs), which allows you to do much more in post processing, such as, recover shadow detail that the NEX sensor records, but is not fully expressed in the JPGs.  The noisy JPGs from the Panasonic would limit your ability to process the images (e.g., recover shadow detail).

Obviously, between the two cameras, I would choose the NEX (I have the 5 and 7), but you should look through zackiedawg's comparison and see what is important to you.

Not to confuse matters, but the Sony RX100 might be a good choice.  Very compact, big sensor for the small size of the camera, good dynamic range and it shoots in RAW format.  If you want to travel light (it is pocketable) and have the ability to take great travel images, the RX100 might be the best option out there.  It's not a wildlife camera because it does not have a superzoom.  Read DPR's review of it.
