Absolutely -- I've been thinking for a while that we need to separate the viewfinder from the lens-and-sensor.  Several years ago I visualized something like a GXR module connected to the camera body by a cable -- you could put the module up on a pole, or stick it underwater, without the controls and display having to be inaccessible or waterproof.

If you separate the screen, you also want at least some controls with it...

A first step has been taken on this: certain cameras equipped with wifi can be viewfindered and controlled via a smartphone app.  Of course, this does increase the viewfinder lag.
