I fail to understand why people are so fixated on new camera models. In the film era, photographers often kept the same body for decades. Now that we have excellent 4/3 sensors, better than any combination of film that was avialable in the film era, don't we have enough?

I'm from the film era...I remember ISO (then known as ASA) 64 and 25. I used the same SLR for 20 years and never needed a day of repair because I took care of it. Times have changed, yet they haven't.

If you pick up magazines from the film era what's the most common topic? It's articles/reviews/questions about the latest film that came out. I remember walking into the camera store and seeing new film on display, and debating to myself if I want to risk using a new film on an upcoming shoot.

Today though when you buy a camera you buy the "film" for the life of that camera, since you can't (yet) upgrade the sensor. Of course you have to choose seriously, and when a new camera comes on the market you (most of the time) get a new film.

I was also an early adopter to digital, having got my first digital back in the 90's. That camera was less than 0.05mp. Even the camera I bought in 2002 was only 2mp, and I noticed a BIG difference in the 3mp upgrade that came out next. Since 2002 I bought 7 cameras...my reason for upgrading was the new camera had a feature the previous one didn't...I didn't upgrade for more mp.

While in each of those cameras I have seen improvements in the sensor over the previous camera, none have been enough to make me say, "I see myself using this camera for the next few years." That is, until I got the E-M5; liked it so much I got two of them. Yes, I can still see ways it can be functionally improved, but it's been the best "film" of any digital I've owned.

Now if the FourThirds hybrid uses the same or better sensor as the E-M5 I may upgrade to that to make better use of my FourThirds lens investment, but I wouldn't be upgrading for the sensor...that would be an added benefit.

I think once SLR cameras started being "automatic" incremental upgrades were inevitable.
