The OP does bring up some very good questions to think about and to debate.

Some new inexpensive lenses are always good. Still there is not much money for a manufacture to make selling inexpensive manual focus lenses. The moeny is in autofocus lenses and there is more profit margins in the higher-end gear.

Yes and no.  Oly sold over 10 milliion PEN half frame cameras.  In the same period I doubt Nikon sold half a million F1/2's.  I think Oly probably made more $$ on the PENs.

Photography gear is a very competitive

Only at the pro end.   Look at how well the E-pl1 sells even today.

so the various manufacturers will be trying to develop new gear to capture more market shares. With luck they will hit on some gear that really sells well and more important makes a very good profit. The E-M5 seems to be making money for Olympus.

Probably not.  The E-pl1 is always in the top ten Amazon best sellers list-sometimes in the top five.  It's development costs have been amortized years ago yet people keep buying them like crazy.  The E-m5 usually isn't even a top ten seller. Interestingly, neither is the NEX 7.

If a person is happy with what they are using and the new gear doesn't offer the thens they want or need there is no need for the person to upgrade. Still others will see some possiblities with the new gear and buy it.

From the OM-d photothreads I have seen posted here, about half of them wasted thier $$.

DPR is basically a camera gear site so thens are always going to lean toward new gear on DPR.

Maybe so.
