In the good old days of 35mm it was possible to retain a body for years and update the lenses because the film was the variable. With sensors changing and improving every year (and more often) it is now possible to improve the final product by upgrading the sensor. So, every now and then it seems sensible to upgrde the body. Of course, there are some bodies which do things very well, or well enough, and those bodies are the ones that we keep as "back-ups". If we could swithch sensors the way we used to switch film then we would probably keep the same body...until a new body came out with higher shutter speeds or better built-in metering. It will always be a slippery slope.

It's true. Cameras are more like computers these days. The quality of the shot relies on the strength of the computer (i.e. the sensor). And the natural process of computers is that they get upgraded quickly.
