D5100/similar tilt/rotate monitor - fragile?
Dec 27, 2012

I am thinking of buying a Nikon D5100 (or maybe a D5000 secondhand, depending on funds - I know it has a different screen which hinges at the bottom, not the side). Whilst the flip out and rotating/tilting screen is a great bonus on a DSLR, especially for someone like me who is only used to compact cameras (a Sony DSC-F707 with a rotating body) as it gives other opportunities for holding the camera and taking pics (and videos) other than using the viewfinder; I am a little worried that it might be fragile, or suceptible to being knocked off, or catch on things etc.

Anyone with any practical experience on the robustness of this? I'd be looking at buying one camera which will last me a long time, ie be a good investment!
