When is enough enough? Locked

Well, yeah, we've surpassed film a while ago. But I'm still finding uses for features and performance I'd never have felt a need for before I had them, so I don't want to discount the possibilities to come. I never envisioned or needed auto-focus until someone figured it out and I still do a lot of shooting without it, but I do a ton WITH it too and I'm glad to have it. I never would have conceived of the 5-axis IBIS in the OMD but I immediately loved what I could do with it once it appeared.

So, its not about NEED. In fact, NEED applies much more to pros shooting for a living than those of us doing this for our own entertainment. I could never shoot much above ISO 800 with film, but being able to shoot easily at 3200 and adequately at 6400 feels like a gift from the deities for me. And not just for shooting in extremely low light, but for keeping my shutter speed and aperture combinations where I want them in marginal light, for extending the useful range of lighting conditions where I can use a long telephoto, etc. I don't feel the need for a clean 26,500 ISO setting, but when we get there, I can all but guarantee I'll find ways to use it and won't want to give it up. I'll be able to zone focus in near darkness and maintain useful shutter speeds - how cool will THAT be? For many, not terribly, but for me, EXTREMELY cool!

I've been happy with my gear since I was shooting square format film with an old Yashica copy of a Rollie TLR. I was happy with m43 a couple of years ago. I'm happier with it now. I'm sure I'll be happier yet in a few more years.

None of the advances are strictly necessary, but I haven't found one yet that didn't open up new creative opportunities. So, hell yeah, I'll take 'em. And we don't know when enough is enough until we surpass it. And for my wants and needs (mostly wants) we have't surpassed enough yet...

As for the GH3 and full frame, that's just a matter of taste. If you like bigger camera bodies (which many people do for plenty of legit reasons), they're very good choices. And if you like the same image quality as the GH3 in a tiny little P&S sized body, we've got those options too. It's all good!
