Ted, you bring up a few good points.

I think technology is always moving forward and real improvements actually do occur. Whether they affect you depends on how you use your equipment and how you present the end results.

I'll use my own case as an example. Since I shoot landscape photos in an attempt to be creative, the system I choose needs to be relatively portable, produce quality that can withstand output to a certain print size and be flexible in lens choices. I started in this format with an E-PL2. This camera produces excellent RAW and JPG output in good light with normal dynamic range. But if you need to lift the shadows (such as high DR), you get quite a bit of noise. In addition, the controls do not facilitate manual mode well as the dial must be turned and pressed. It's the pressing that makes one crazy, even though it sounds like a really trivial point. When your adjusting shutter speed and aperture constantly it's often possible to inadvertently press when you just meant to turn, causing an aperture change instead of a change in shutter speed.

The E-M5 solved both of the fore-mentioned issues for me. The DR is much better and the shadows do not produce nearly as much noise when lifted. Additionally, the controls work perfectly for the kind of photography that I do. The stabilization has actually made it possible for me to shoot handheld in situations I wouldn't have considered before. These changes were significant and demonstrate several reasons this camera system has risen to the level it has.

While I'm a geek and enjoy new technology as well as the next guy, this camera is a tool. I do not care about the latest and greatest but advances that affect my processes and output in a material way.

The fact is, there are those that have different motives in purchasing new equipment that I did. That's great but there are those of us that actually use the new features to our advantage!
