Where you place the teleconverter makes a difference in how the combination works. Placed next to the lens with tubes behind gives less total magnification but a longer working distance and vice versa. Also if you are getting that serious about macro work, you should invest in a focusing rail.

Other fun things to try are a 35mm prime lens reversed. It won't matter what brand of lens you use if it is mounted backwards. reversing a retrofocus lens increases the working distance. As you start doing higher mag work you will understand why working distance is so important.
