I've never used the Tamron, but do have the 24-120 f/4. Here's why I'd recommend it over anything else as a general walk about lens for FX:

  • Excellent range: 24-120. Really useful. Good and wide at one end, got mid-tele at the other. I would not want to lose 70-120.
  • Sharp (given that it is a zoom).
  • Excellent VR. I took shots hand held as slow as 1/6 s in Notre Dame and the image is excellent.
  • IQ is excellent (given that it is a zoom).

If I could have only one lens (that currently exists!) this would be it.
