How to take Christmas lights around a window in total darkness

I've tried everything but I can never get the proper colors in the bulbs to show up.  The bulbs, C7 ceramics, are around my window, and I am outside trying to take a photo.  The bulbs are very bright and very colorful, and I want to take the photo in pitch darkness, in the middle of the night, and have the photo show the bulbs in their true, natural, bright colors, but I'm noticing that the reds are turning out white, and the greens are also washed out, etc.  I'm using a 5D Mark III and even tried using multiple exposures.  Is this scenario not possible with today's CMOS technology? In order to get the bulbs not washed out, the surrounding area is pitch black, which is not what my eyes see.
