it's the subject to camera distance that matters for distortion. The lens just gives magnification. Wider lenses give less magnification so users tend to move in closer, making it seem as thought the 'lens' is distorting the image. it's not.
Having said that.. if you are restricted in the amount of distance you can move away from the subject, you may have to live with some distortion.
