I ran a quick test at 40mm, and the back-focus seemed to *just* start asserting itself.  But if you double-blind tested me, I might have trouble telling the MF from the PDAF shots apart at 3:1 in Lightroom so it sounds like 40mm might be the true onset of this problem.

So, yes, I think this is a fairly small problem space -- basically if you jam the lens to full telephoto wide open, it's advisable to go DMF and manually focus (if you have time), but otherwise I think you'll be fine.  At least on my copy of the lens.

This conclusion was borne out empirically as well by some tack-sharp 37mm snapshots around the Christmas tree yesterday morning.  I just used intelligent-auto for "point and shoot" mode.

But - as I've stated elsewhere the real solution is for Sony to release a firmware patch to enable micro-focus adjust on the kit lens.
