I visited a historic home/estate on Sunday, & while photographs were permitted inside the main mansion, flash was not. My 15-85 on a 7D was just not up to the task as most rooms had pretty low lighting. Tripod not allowed due to volume of people, so high ISO's were all I could do to try & get reasonable results. I really don't like going high, but a lot of the time I was forced to go up to 1600 & beyond. My 50f/1.8 would have done for some shots in the larger rooms, [I left it at home unfortunately!] but something like a 24/30 f/1.8-f/2 would be perfect for the rest. I have looked at Canon & Sigmas offerings, & have a budget of about £250-300. Any suggestions? Thank's.

There are old pilots, & there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.

Canon 28 1.8. The Sigma is re known for its soft corners (both the 30mm and the new 35mm) and you play the Sigma lottery and Sigmas Auto Focusing isn't as nice as Canons USM not to mention the 28 1.8 is a highly regarded lens.

I chose 35f2 over 28. 35 mm focal length is really great on both FF and crop and for $289 can't beat the price for the quality at f2.2 (portraits) and f5.6(groups)

I would suggest the 35F2 but I have heard a lot of bad things about it especially on FF. You spend $200 on it used or $300 brand new and it has the same build as the 50 1.8, practically the same af system, only 5 blades like the 50 1.8 so you get bad bokeh, and it's inferior to the 28 1.8 in almost every way. The 28 1.8 has much more pleasing bokeh, is faster being 1.8, wider without being too wide to distort heavily, has true USM, and a much better build quality.
