He used the same shutter and aperture as you did, higher ISO, and he was in full daylight to take a good exposure. (I can tell the lighting because there are sun rays in the 2nd shot.)
You were in much lower light and used half his ISO. That's why the photo was dark on your screen. Nothing wrong with your camera. You have to learn to judge which pictures are possible and which are not depending on lighting, distance, and zoom you have to use.
