I wasn't convinced by Sony neither before and I was one of those people who were advising others to always buy Canon for compacts and ignore Sonys, Samsungs "because they have no photographic pedigree" etc. But things do change and you mustkeep an open mind. You might want to read from people who have had both cameras (S95/S100 and RX100). There are many, many of them commenting ion these pages. They have had first hand experience with both, taking the same pic with both and comparinf under the same conditions. And they all agree on exactly the opposite of what you've concluded: The RX100 is in a different higher class than the S95. Not perfect by any means but still clearly superior in all lighting conditions (expect from shots taken from very close).
Yes, me too. Looking for an upgrade to my S95, in particular better continuous A/F for occasional shots of grandchildren. Unfortunately the S100/110 are hardly any better in that regard. RX100 seems to be the logical route, apart from cost.
I have to admit to having been a little bit sceptical of the IQ claims being made by some RX100 owners, until I saw DPRE's Group Review and compared the real life skyline (of Seattle?) shots. Viewing at normal screen size the detail and clarity of the RX100 pic is clear to see and seems to me to be a noticable step above the S series. This surprised me, being at normal screen viewing size where differences are usually negligible. Interestingly, with the studio shots at small print size it's much closer, with the S95(not S100) having the edge to my eyes at base ISO, although not at ISO800. That's my impression.
If the OP wants to stay with Canon, I'd wait to see what announcements come in January. I'm sure all manufacturers are working flat out to catch up with Sony.

Hi, Nick, you mentioned DPRE's Group Review and RX100's excellent IQ at the center. If you take a look again, you may notice that RX100's image is soft at the right edge and corners.
That's a bummer. However, I will consider a RX100 since it has such a fast AF, much better high ISO and very good center IQ.
