iPAD question - must I sync to my desktop to get pics, music, etc ?

Hi - just received a new 16G iPAD (latest ver w/3g) from my lovely family. Is there a simple way way I can transfer pics & music DIRECTLY from my iPhone ? Or, do I have to go through some 'syncing' procedure to my desktop first ?
