I have the f4 IS. It gets less work than my 18-50, but it is my favorite lens. It is sharp and not heavy. I am not familiar with the newer f2.8, but there is a large size difference with the older and that will make a difference with hand held shots.
If you haven't yet, I suggest that you play with both at the same time at a camera store. This is one of those great situations where you win with either lens.
I love my 70-200 f4 and would buy it again.
