Do I really need to upgrade Photoshop from 5 to 6 to view RAW D600 files?

I don't think CS5 has RAW support for the Nikon D600. Your options are to upgrade to CS6 or download the free DNG converter, convert the NEF files to DNG, and then they will open in CS5 ACR.

I used Adobe's DNG converter with LR 2 & CS 4 to deal with the NEF files of my D7000 and it took some time to realize that a substantial part of the reason I was not pleased with the images was the DNG converter. It also took a great deal of time to adjust the images to something I thought was tolerable. I would suggest taking a look at the D600's NEF files with a trial copy of LR 4 and/or CS 6 and Nikon's software as well and comparing them with the ones converted by the DNG converter.

I would have to double check, but I think Adobe has limited upgrade pricing to CS 6 until the end of the month (just a few days away) so that would be something to consider as well.

As they say, YMMV, but that was my experience with the DNG converter.
