I think it comes down to sensor size, how in focus the shot is, your PP sharpening technique, lens used, iso/noise, and MP size is somewhere in the middle when it comes to level of importance of cropability and print size that you can make while retaining a high level of detail.

A lot of 5DClassic users that have the 60D were telling me how they can crop more and make larger prints with their 12MP 5D vs the 18MP 60D and that's due to sensor size alone.

It also depends on how far away you are going to sit away from the photo, nobody is going to sit 10" away from their poster sized print pixel peeping or else they're shooting for the wrong reasons.

If MP's were the prime concern when it comes to crop ability and print size the cheap point and shoots would be much better than my xsi, the older rebels, the older nikon and canon full frames but this is obviously not the case.
