Sorry to disappoint you but these werre ALL shot in 'P' mode with ISO set to max at 6400.. I've never used that AMB mode you speak of.. it just came by the camera as it saw the pic at the time.. same with all..
I've been doing some experiments and have discovered behaviour I hadn't noticed before. If I shoot in P mode in very low light in RAW or RAW+JPEG, it just takes a single shot at max allowed ISO, and there's no delay in seeing the review image.
But in Fine mode, it behaves differently: I can hear the shutter firing several times (3?) and then there's a delay of several seconds with a Processing image message, before the review image appears. This has less noise than I would have expected at high ISOs. So, is it just doing some intensive noise reduction, or is it running an undocumented multi-frame mode? I suspect the latter.
I don't think it's possible that it's doing that in P mode, it would be very weird.
So why the multiple shutter firing and the long processing time?
Let me think, must be some setting you have tweaked and forgotten!
Try it with yours, and see if you get the same effect. I find it occurs in all the PASM modes, with very high ISOs. It would certainly explain why Fine mode seems to sometimes produce better results than RAW.

Just to confirm, that's Fine output, and in the menu, High ISO NR Normal and Long Exposure NR On? I can't think what else could affect it
All correct. A mode, shutter speed 1/10 sec. Maybe you're talking about too slow shutter speeds? I just tried 0.4sec and still normal behaviour. It is very weird that yours is doing this. It is late though (at least here it's 3am) and in the night we do miss obvious things!
Could be that you have a somewhat defective unit? It is far fetched, so probably not... the interior of the cathedral you posted also seemed a bit uncharacteristic for ISO3200 from the RX100, but that might just be due to sub-optimal RAW conversion.
This is to with camera behaviour, not faults (I haven't spotted any faults, but even if there are any, it wouldn't change this). The cathedral pic was shot in RAW, this multi-shot behaviour only happens in JPEG-only modes. I made other AMB exposures in the cathedral, and they were obviously less noisy (almost noise-free of course), but that's to be expected. As previously mentioned, I don't usually shoot JPEG single shots (ie, excluding panoramas and AMBs), so I've not previously observed how it behaves in JPEG only modes, and can't judge what's "normal".
Well, I think it isn't normal that in P,A,S,M modes (i.e. not auto modes), the camera defaults to taking bursts of shots and processing them. There is a dedicated scene mode for that (handheld night scene, or something like that) and it definitely shouldn't take bursts in PSAM modes without you telling it to, whether it's jpeg only or RAW or RAW+jpeg.
Mine doesn't do it and yours shouldn't do it either.
Cracked it! Turns out I had HDR set, which of course only operates in JPEG modes, and takes three exposures. What fooled me was that my NEXs don't allow you to set HDR when in RAW and vice versa, but the RX100 does, but only takes actually HDR images when in pure JPEG modes. It hadn't occurred to me that its behaviour differed from the NEX cameras I'm used to in the Sony world. So put it down to user error/confusion.
