My 14-24 is my favorite lens for close up at 2.8, I can see why OP needs spot on AF.

For sure. It's not even close to "spot on". For other reasons, I ended up moving to the D600. The AF fine tune function made a big difference, but it seems to not be enough even at -20. I bought the FoCal software package which seems very nice and a bit more reliable than other focus testing techniques. This confirmed my suspicions with this lens.

Fortunately, the lens is still under warranty, so I sent it back to Nikon. We'll see how it goes - if they can get it within the AF fine-tune range, I'll be happy.
